Stones Throw Fan Video Contest

In celebration of their 15-year anniversary, the always-on point and solid record label Stones Throw has put together a contest for it’s loyal and loving fans. As head of the label, Peanut Butter Wolf came up with an idea to give fans the ability to create and visualize their own music videos from any Stones Throw artists over the past years. Many favorite songs never had visuals to go along with them, and this gives users the chance to interpret the songs from their own creative perspectives. Peanut Butter Wolf has always been very inviting to up and coming artists to work with his label, in the past  he picked a fan’s videos that later was featured on a Stones Throw DVD and  gave the director the opportunity to make videos for Mad Decent and other marketing brands.

The rules of the contest are fairly simple; fans can use any song from the Stones Throw catalog, create a video in any creative form, and then upload them through Vimeo. This catalog is full of great talent from Madlib, J Dilla, Aloe Blacc, Madvillain, Quasimoto, Mayer Hawthorne,  and many more, giving fans a variety of options to work with. While many videos will be submitted, Peanut Butter Wolf will limit the selection, eventually announcing a winner based on view count, comments, and his own personal favorite. Semi-finalists will get a $200 credit towards stonesthrow.com, and the winner will receive $1000 and the opportunity to direct an upcoming video for the record label. The last videos were submitted on July 1st, and a decision will be made within the next few days.

This is such a great and interactive opportunity from an absolutely sincere record label. Stones Throw has always been about its artist’s creative control and ideas, never jeopardizing their quality or record label fame for money or success. This contest is just another example of that.

Here are a two of the top videos getting major Internet hype and views over the last few weeks.

This video is directed by Tuomas Vaukhonen and Jeremias Nieminen for J Dilla’s “Last Donut Of The Night” one of the many favorites of Dilla’s timeless album Donuts.

This second video comes from Kristoffer Crook for the classic Madlib alter ego Quasimoto’s “Low Class Conspiracy”. This clip is my favorite I’ve seen yet, but check them all out and decide for yourself!
