Review:

It is American Craft Beer week! Rejoice fellow beer lovers. For too long has America been left in the dust in the great brewing race. Since the 6th millennium BC Humans have brewed and enjoyed this esoteric beverage. America and beer have had a bumpy relationship. Since prohibition ended our beer industry has been in recovery, held back by the shadow of commercialized light beer. In recent times a massive resurgence of micro brewing has brought delicious beer back to Americans and earned our nation respect amongst the global brewing community. Boulder Colorado has been at the heart of this revolution. Avery brewing opened in 1993 and has been pumping out great beer ever since. Today I sampled their Belgian style White ale, White Rascal.
This light flavorful offering is an excellent refreshment after a day in the Florida sun. I typically have a preference for darker more full bodied brews, but it being the summer season decided to go with something a little more drinkable. This particular beer is a belgian style wheat ale, and as claimed on the bottle is, “unfiltered (yep, that’s yeast on the bottom!) and cleverly spiced with coriander and Curacao orange peel producing a refreshingly zesty classic ale”. Most beer available these days is filtered to some degree or another however leaving a beer unfiltered can add a unique yeasty character to its flavour.
The brew pours a light golden straw in color with only a hint of bubbly head which quickly dissipates. The brewer recommends a slow pour and a pause at the end to leave about an ounce in the bottle. Swirl the remainder gently before adding to your glass to introduce the sediment. The nose is rich with citrus, wheat, and spices enticing you to take a sip.
Plenty of flavour greets the palate at first taste, carried by a very effervescent mouthfeel. Both the wheat and belgian styling are apparent, and balance well with a light bitter bite. The mouthfeel is light and refreshing, I could comfortably have a few of these in a sitting.
A great example of an interesting style, and another solid offering from the minds at Avery Brewing. This beer comes recommended and will garner a solid B. If you have not yet explored what Avery has to offer I highly suggest you try some of their beers the next time you are browsing at your local liquor store.

Cheers, Matt
