Gang Gang Dance’s fifth album, Eye Contact, is nothing short of a journey through the cosmos. The experimental New York five-piece has created fluidity throughout this album, making it nearly impossible to break the tracks apart. The album’s opener, “Glass Jar,” stands out, however, if not for length alone. The eleven-minute opener sets the stage for the psycho-synth sounds of the transcendental adventure through the maze that becomes Eye Contact.
Haunting male vocals open the album, declaring: “I can hear everything. It’s everything time.” And everything time, it is. Gang Gang Dance has created an eclectic sound, blending soft synth sounds and chilling keyboard sequences with evocative percussion and the pleasantly shrill vocals of Lizzi Bougatsis to create a kaleidoscope of reverberation.
True to their underground roots, Gang Gang Dance has not created a consumer-friendly sound. They have, however, created an experience that beckons open minds.
Combining electronic, pop, post-punk, psychedelic rock, and a touch of Middle Eastern flare has posed no problem for the band. As the nine tracks play, fusing flawlessly into one another, the ground begins to disappear, leaving the listener floating in the air with a sense of extraterrestrial wanderlust. Eye Contact awakens the senses, showcasing the band’s growth as they move from experimental sound clash to flawlessly concocted musical explosion.
