The Wooden Birds’ second full-length album, Two Matchsticks, is a simple blend of clean melodies, hushed drums, and the soothing voice of Andrew Kenny (formerly of American Analog Set). While the album’s sounds avoid much experimentation, there is a sense of tranquility that flows throughout the tracks, making it an easy listen and an album worthy of a summertime playlist.
The album’s title track, “Two Matchsticks,” is one of its most distinctive pieces; there is a chilling depth in Kenny’s voice as he employs repletion and sings: “You’re gonna burn out alone” at the close of the song. While the track sets a high standard for Two Matchsticks, The Wooden Birds falter slightly as the distinctive feather-like heaviness of “Two Matchsticks” is lost in the obvious influence of Iron and Wine in tracks such as “Cross My Heart” and “Warm To The Blade.” The Wooden Birds do a wonderful job of echoing Sam Beam, but would be wise to create a more defining, personal sound.
Two Matchsticks may not exactly be upbeat, but there is a feeling of positivity that radiates throughout the entire album. The female vocals in “Baby Jeans,” catchy rhythm of “Too Pretty To Say Please,” and the mystical vocals of “Be No Life” give energy to the lyrics and soul to the sounds. The Wooden Birds’ only apparent flaw lies in a slight lack of maturity—a maturity that is sure to be gained as the band continues to produce music. Growth is already apparent since the band’s first album, Magnolia, and will only continue as they work to develop a recognizable style. As a whole, Two Matchsticks is refreshing, smooth, and characterized by a complex-simplicity that makes The Wooden Birds a band to keep on your radar.
