Sub Pop
8.5/10
Mister Heavenly, a three-piece comprised of Modest Mouse’s Joe Plummer, Ryan Katner of Man Man, and Nick Thorburn of The Unicorns and Islands, has come together to create a genre-defining eruption of sound that sports the moniker Out of Love. The fellows blend 1950s Doo-wop traditions with more predictable grunge and punk influences to produce the self-coined genre “doom wop.” And while I’m still not entirely sure what exactly “doom wop” means, my ears are able to understand, most notably through “Diddy Eyes”—a track that seamlessly fuses a 1950s-style Doo-wop handclap and melody (and title) with a circa 1991 garage-grunge bass line.
This indie-rock super-group lives up to its expectations, producing an album that is at the same time congenial and unfamiliar. The boys piece together their individual fascinations for experimentation, lyrical craftsmanship, and three unique styles of creepy to give birth to Out of Love. Then again, what else would you expect from Sub Pop?
While all three men clearly bring their individualistic contributions to the album, it seems that there is an ever-lingering Modest Mouse-ian influence throughout the entirety of Out of Love. The group’s balance of creative playfulness and venerated professionalism is unparalleled, fashioning not only a transcendental sound, but also an unearthly state of mind for its listeners. While each of the twelve tracks on Out of Love has been conscientiously crafted, the album as a whole slightly lacks a sense of perfect cohesion; but this eclectic all-over-the-place-ness gives the album a distinct personality that is worthy of praise.
