Paradise is the new, aptly named release from English folk rockers Slow Club. Quirky and deceptively simple, the band consists of Rebecca Taylor and Charles Watson who form a kind of one man band, utilizing everything from folkish guitar riffs to a plethora of eccentric string and percussion instruments to create the drowsy, sugary crooning that is just sweet enough to keep you listening.
The album alternates between energetic, percussion driven tracks and slower, more intimate songs that nevertheless work together to build an environment that you want to, and can, get easily lost in. Their sound is comparable to Los Campesinos on Xanax; a marriage of voices driven by an eclectic and memorable sound, though much less spastic and significantly more controlled. Shimmering, echoing, at times very subtly complex, the instrumentals that back up Taylor and Watson’s angsty but lyrical warbling is inviting, and the richness of their sound makes me almost curious as to how only two people can produce such layered music live.
Though at times Paradise can be a bit cloying, there is something redeeming and undeniably genuine about both of their voices, as if they simply can’t help their sentimentality. In their longest track ‘Horses Jumping,’ which contains the hidden track entitled ‘Paradise,’ the couple sings, “I wanna live in paradise/I wanna live where its simple and without complexity/I might move around/You’re always next to me.” It’s hard not to enjoy music that is so naturally heartfelt.
