Cold Specks: “When The City Lights Dim”
Soulful and simple. These are the two words that best describe the new Cold Specks album I Predict a Graceful Expulsion. Released May 22nd, the album is a resounding success. Delicate piano, rhythmic guitar, and the occasional implementation of orchestral strings thrust the beautifully throaty and edgy vocal styling’s of Al Spx to the forefront of the listening experience.
It is not uncommon for me to often find myself guilty of that age-old sin of skipping over multiple tracks at a time on an album in order to get to “the good stuff.” In all fairness, most of the time, I only give each song a good 10 seconds to catch my interest before I skip ahead to the next, but in this particular case, I found myself unable to pull myself away from even a single track. Not a single song off of the 11-track album is worth skipping over; each one contributes something new to the overall sound of this band and the overall effect that it has on the audience leaving yours truly, frankly spellbound.
It’s been a long time since I have heard a voice like that of the Cold Specks’ singer. Though undeniably young, the 24-year-old songstress has an old voice, earthy and rich with character, experience, and soul. Born Canadian, Spx brings her Cold Specks persona to life from London. After releasing her single “Holland” online, it comes as no surprise that her overall talent and unique sound drew instant attention and was soon signed to a deal with Mute Records.
This being the band’s first album, the end product is highly impressive. The overall sound of the album is a unique mix of folk, blues, southern gospel, a hefty amount of soul mixed in with some Gothic tendencies and the occasional hint of bluegrass.
While the music in itself is truly beautiful in all of its simplicity, the vocals and by association the lyrics, are what suck you in and keep you rooted and mesmerized song after song. In the song “When the City Lights Dim,” Spx croons, “I will teach these lungs to yearn / fill this hungry heart with things to burn” and as she carries on with the song, it is almost as if she is pulling from deep within her skin and bones to drag out each and every gritty and powerful word she can muster in order to create something strong and lasting, something that sticks to your insides long after you hear it and leaves you going back for more time and time again.
