Antichrist

Directed By: Lars von Trier
10/10
Antichrist was the talk of Cannes in 2009 where Charlotte Gainsbourg took home the Best Actress award for her role in the film. With it’s graphic sex and violence it has caused a controversy among movie-goers, polarizing the viewers in to those who love and those who hate the film.
While many people can find many negative things to say about this film, it should be said that it has the best cinematography of any movie since There Will Be Blood, it is so beautiful you will find yourself just staring, mouth agape in awe. That is, however, in complete contrast to what you will do as the story progresses, this movie is a slew of horror, erotica, and cruelty, and usually all at the same time.
After a tragic loss, a wife (given only the title “She”) is confined to a hospital from her extreme depression. Her therapist husband (dubbed “He”) decides to treat her himself and takes her to their cabin deep in “Eden Forest” to confront her fears and help her recover. But when the darker side of nature takes over, they are going to have to fight to survive their journey into the heart of darkness.
Willem Defoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg give the most some of the most riveting performances of the decade, while Lars von Trier takes no prisoners in this terrifying masterpiece, it is gorgeous, and brutal and can hardly be explained in words.
The Antichrist is finally being released on Blu Ray and DVD this month.
