American Grindhouse
Running Time: 1 Hr. 20 Min.
Release Date: 2010
Directed By: Elijah Drenner
Dropps: 7/10
It has been said that the first thing anyone did after getting the first motion picture camera to work was to ask a girl to stand in front of it and take her clothes off. After watching American Grindhouse it isn’t that hard to believe. Not for the faint of heart, this flick explores the history and development of American exploitation cinema, from the circus-like filmmakers traveling with their reels across the country, to beach movies, to the projects of Quentin Tarantino. The movie even includes a few compelling explorations of the human psyche in an attempt to comprehend our obsessions with sex and violence.
Narrated by Robert Forster (of Jackie Brown fame), American Grindhouse features an array of iconic grindhouse directors, actresses, actors and film
historians, including one who wrote a book on the subject. With clips from dozens of movies and an in-depth discussion on not only the ‘what,’ but the ‘how’ and the ‘why’ of every era of the grindhouse cinema, this film is a must-see for any fan of the genre.
