The War on Terror has become highly politicized over the years; however, the soldiers fighting these battles are rarely the focal point in that discussion. Restrepo documents the deployment of a 20-man platoon of U.S. soldiers in the Korengal Valley region of Afghanistan. The documentary focuses on an advanced outpost, “Restrepo,” named in memory of a platoon medic who was killed in action at the start of the film. Filmmakers Sebastian Junger and Tim Hetherington embed themselves into the daily workings of this remote platoon to capture firsthand accounts of the joys of victory, the experience of engaging with Taliban soldiers, the dysphoria of death, and fear in the eyes of the soldiers. Restrepo uses live footage from skirmishes as well as interviews from the platoon members to fully transplant the viewer onto the battlefield in the Korengal Valley. This Afghani front line is often called “the deadliest place on Earth” and Restrepo places you right at the center of the conflicts. It is refreshing to see a documentary that does not try to score any political points or motivate you towards any political side. Restrepo succeeds in that the only people that it concerns itself with are the soldiers it is documenting. You would have a hard time finding a more involved, emotional, gritty experience in a movie this year than the Oscar-nominated Restrepo.
