Riding off the success of 2008′s Taken, which had Liam Neeson rampaging over Paris to recover his kidnapped daughter from a sex trafficking syndicate, the actor is once again the star of an action thriller set abroad. Unknown has all the staples of an action film: slick car chases, explosions dismantling buildings, and an action hero who can keep his cool under extreme duress. Unknown’s conflict revolves around Martin Harris (Neeson) becoming involved in an automobile accident only to awake and discover that someone else is now claiming to be Martin Harris – the problem being that the new Harris has the proof to back it up, including support of Harris’s wife Liz (played by January Jones with her subtle charms). As with Taken, Liam Neeson is unrelenting in his pursuit of the truth, willing to burn Berlin to the ground if it could help him.
Where Unknown unravels however, is through every implausible twist and lapse in logic that undermines the surrounding action. The suspension of disbelief required in action movies is an attainable feat that is normally honored by those in the audience, however, when zany twists are injected to force socio-political tension in the climax of a thriller, I have to tap out.
All in all, the acting is above-average for an action thriller with Liam Neeson, January Jones, and Frank Langella giving proficient performances. Unfortunately, if you were expecting a spiritual sequel to Taken, you will leave a little disappointed.
