“The Help” is based on Kathryn Stockett’s best selling novel of the same name. Set in 1962, “The Help,” is the humble story of Skeeter, a white, rough-kneed reporter who refuses to conform to the 1960′s housewife lifestyle, and her trial to write meaningful stories. More importantly, this film is about Abileen and Minnie, two African American maids trapped in a crooked system of prejudice before the outbreak of the Civil Rights Movement. They decide to allow Skeeter to tell their stories through an anonymous book, in the face of pernicious racism. Because of their courage, the entire community of African American housekeepers aren’t afraid to fight back. Minnie, in particular, makes a killer chocolate pie. But to get the context, dear Reader, I’ll let you see the film.
Overall, “The Help” is never overbearing when dealing with tough issues, instead it deals with them gracefully. It is also never unnecessarily violent. At times, the characters become stereotypical, but this is somewhat of a precursor for most family flicks and adds to the humor. There is nothing innovative about the form, (typical narrative, mainstream format) and the main focus is the historical context. However, if you’re looking for a good combination of humor and necessary truth, “The Help” is the film you want to see this weekend.
