One of McCarthy’s more recent works, The Sunset Limited is essentially a play
consisting of two characters sitting in a room. McCarthy is known for crafting depth andbeauty out of fairly simple premises and The Sunset Limited is no exception. The twocharacters are known only as White and Black. White is a white professor and an atheist, Black is a black ex-convict who has found God. The two men are vastly different people, yet through their debate the men hope to divulge the meaning of life. The professorbelieves life is pain and should be ended as soon as possible. Black believes life is beautiful, despite living the decidedly more difficult life of the pair. Black and White sit within Black’s apartment in the ghetto because Black had saved White from jumping in front of the Sunset Limited immediately prior to the start of the play.
An apt way to characterize The Sunset Limited for those familiar with his work
would be as “McCarthy-lite”. The usual weight of McCarthy’s work is present, but the prose McCarthy is known for is largely absent due to the nature of the chosen medium. Despite this obstacle, McCarthy still manages to craft a well-wrought and engaging story about faith, life, and death. Though Black initially dominates the conversation, his debate with White soon turns into a matter of life and death for White, and as anticipated, the tale’s resolution does not come easily for the characters.
The Sunset Limited is a quick read, but it’s profoundly affecting and a worthy
story. HBO is airing a made-for-tv adaption of McCarthy’s play starring Tommy Lee Jones and Samuel L. Jackson this February. I recommend checking them both out.
