When someone mentions the words “comfort food,” there are certain images that flash into the mind: fried chicken, biscuits, grits, fried fish, and the like – basically, great staples to the American diner setting. There aren’t so many places that you can really experience that in the Central Florida area, but the perfect place to curb your comfort craving is at Townhouse Restaurant in Oviedo.
The Townhouse Restaurant is an unmistakable concrete yellow building with blue trim on the corner of Broadway Street and Central Avenue in Downtown Oviedo. Their indoor decor is that of a diner feel with a similar color palette to the exterior except for the numerous chicken-themed additives to the walls. The chicken items are homage to the area’s most notorious winged creatures, the Oviedo chickens, that take residence in the area. Even the merchandise and menus carry pictures of the adorable birds.
With the abundance of chickens in the restaurant, you would image that is all that is served. However, there is a great selection of food ranging from breakfast items to dinner courses. The menu contains a lot of the traditional diner fare from biscuits and gravy for breakfast, to a BLT on the sandwich list, to fried chicken on the “Home Style Dinner” list. In addition to these, there are numerous Greek cuisine items. One of my personal favorites is the gyro and eggs on the breakfast menu. Every entrée at Townhouse comes with its own selection of sides; sandwiches come with either soup or fries (there’s also a neat sides-of-the-day list you can pick from), dinner plates get two sides and a biscuit, and breakfasters get either a biscuit or toast and grits or home fries.
Besides the items that are on the main menu, you need to check out some of their other dishes. There is a rotating specials list for breakfast and dinner that are posted on each table, Monday through Friday for breakfast and Tuesday through Saturday for dinner. Some past featured items include potato pancakes, a chicken fajita omelet, fish fry night (Friday night is always a fish special), and Greek lamb with potatoes. Also, for those people looking for an extra little deal, the restaurant has included a “2 for $20” dinner special for Tuesday and Wednesday nights which includes soup or salad, two entrees, and a dessert.
Speaking of desserts, Townhouse is one restaurant where you will definitely want to save room. There is a variety of pies (cherry, chocolate cream, and othes), a nice big brownie, and baklava just to name a few.
About 90% of the serving staff at Townhouse are women, all of whom are very conversational and make you feel as if you’re in the comfort of an old friend’s dining room. They are all very kind and will stop to chat with you even when the restaurant is extremely busy.
The Townhouse in Oviedo is a great place to get real, down-home cooking. The food is delicious, there is a nice variety of items to choose from, and almost any menu selection will fill you up. The service is good and comes from great, personable staff. Additionally, all the great food items in the restaurant are reasonably priced. Definitely worth the visit next time you’re in Oviedo.
