Despite the name, you won’t have to worry about any residual phlegm after dinner has been served. The word “hawkers” refers to Asian cooks typically found on the side of the street vending out of mobile carts and stands. Hawkers Asian Street Fare has assembled some of the most appetizing dishes inspired by these roadside chefs and brought them together on Mills Avenue for your dining pleasure.
As smaller sit-down establishment, a variety of seating arrangements are available including high tops fixated around the bar, an adjacent dining room, and an outside patio. The décor is simplistic and clean cut, with collages of various Asian newspapers on the tabletops. Service was quick and efficient and the staff was extremely affable, adding to the pleasant environment.
The menu features a number of Asian cuisines including Chinese, Viet, Korean, and Malay with most dishes under $6. You’re able to order from various sections including salads, small plates, five spice entrees, noodle soup bowls, stir-fry, and Hawkers originals. Meals are recommended in three courses, but two was plenty sufficient, especially when sharing with the other members of my table.
For our starters we enjoyed pan seared pot stickers, vegetarian spring rolls, and chicken egg rolls. The rolls weren’t the most flavorful, but the pot stickers definitely earned their spot as specialty dish. I would also recommend trying the curry meatballs or mashed potatoes (seriously, these guys make some awesome curry).
All of the portions were significantly smaller than most Asian restaurants, but extremely filling. One of the larger dishes was the Curry Laksa, a combination of noodle and soup bowl, served with egg noodles, coconut curry stew, a hard-boiled egg, shrimp, and chicken. The spice and flavor of this dish was a great contrast to the more mild Malaysian dishes. We also had the satisfaction of trying the Mee Goreng, a noodle dish stir fried in sweet chili sauce with shrimp and scallions, the Five Spice Pork Choppettes, and the signature Char Kway Teo, one of Malaysia’s most popular street fare items.
