Damn! The Best Videos of the Month

Tags: , , , , , , , , , ,

Today, we visit sites like YouTube and Vimeo everyday without even thinking twice about it. There used to be a time when we had to pay to see movies, go to the theaters to catch a trailer, watch MTV for actual music videos and hope that we could catch an entertaining clip on the news, America’s Funniest Home Videos or our dumb friend’s family video camera. Now all of that and more is an eye blink away from us, and no celebrity, politician or musician’s failure, near-death experience or Freudian slip is unavailable to us, thanks to the plethora of smartphone cameras on the prowl.

The Dropp decided to take a step back and look at the coolest damn videos of the month. If there’s anything that January taught us in Video Dropps, it’s that violence and misfortune are either funny, fun, or just plain cool. Here are the top 10 we chose, in order.

10. Real Estate: “Easy”

This is a street team at their guerrilla warfare finest. Who knew that listening to indie rock could be so life or death.

9. Active Child: “Hanging On”

“The most dangerous fishing trip ever”–brought to you by a dream pop/chillwave/shoegaze/ambient musician.

8. A Place To Bury Strangers: “So Far Away”

What better way to make a music video not too long after Steve Jobs’ death than to smash together a collage of Instagram photos!

7. Sleigh Bells: “Comeback Kid”

It’s got bass, it’s got Nirvana T-shirts, it’s got dancing, it’s got rifles, it’s got Alexis Krauss in a Misfits-esque leather jacket. Bring on the Reign of Terror.

6. Prometheus trailer

In a rather “Inception” style trailer (both sound- and ambiance-wise), Prometheus looks like it packs a much more exciting punch than that horrid Scott-directed Robin Hood bullshit from a couple years ago.

5. A$AP Rocky: “Wassup” (NSFW)

First of all . . . NSFW. Second of all . . . NSFW.

4. Shut Up and Play the Hits trailer

A very cool looking trailer for a very cool looking documentary on a very cool looking finale to a very cool band.

3. Cloud Nothings: “No Future/No Past”

How does an old man floating along the ground fit into this song? We’re still working on that one. But this song is great and the cinematography is even better.

2. The Kills: “The Last Goodbye”

Musicians don’t always end up as good actors if they try to make the switch from music to film, but director-actress Samantha Morton (of Synecdoche, New York and Minority Report) found something of an actor in both Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince. Their expressions are priceless in this photo-booth music video.

1. Youth Lagoon: “July”

Trevor Powers gave us more than a music video with “July”; he gave us an apocalyptic summer blockbuster in less than 5 minutes.

I like the Kills but I love Alison Mosshart more.
