The comparisons between newcomer James Blake and Justin Vernon of Bon Iver are at once obvious and vast. So when Blake tweeted last week “24th August 2011 – James Blake & Bon Iver ‘Fall Creek Boys Choir’” we weren’t really that surprised.
The question burning inside everyone was what “Fall Creek Boys Choir” was actually supposed to be. Well, today, being Aug. 24, Blake revealed the song on BBC Radio. And–for better or worse–there is no choir of little boys, not even the sound of creeks. Instead, it’s exactly what you’d expect from the collaboration of Vernon and Blake, two very minimalistic artists. It features Vernon on the vocals with his traditionally auto-tuned self, and Blake on the instruments with some keyboard samples and what sounds like a barking retriever (actually, it’s most likely a cuĂca).
It’s definitely a somber affair, but that’s no surprise considering it came from the introspective, cabin-dwelling American folkster and the new British melancholy minimalist. But “Fall Creek Boys Choir” might be that perfect tune to ease you into this Fall season.
