Here’s a collaboration you might not expect: Brooklyn’s dance-punk duo Matt & Kim, chart-topping rapper Soulja Boy and Andrew W.K., a hard rock singer-songwriter often seen drenched in blood. But that’s one of Converse’s newest marketing strategies, as Matt & Kim gathered the other two artists up in the new Converse series, which they’re calling “3 Artists 1 Song,” to record the single “I’m a Goner.”
But as different as these three artists seem to be, it’s not really surprising. Matt & Kim’s version of punk is pretty upbeat with a moderate amount of pop vibe. Andrew W.K.’s version of hard rock is also on the lighter side, and his biggest single is called “Party Hard.” Soulja Boy–of course–is a fiend for pop-induced rap.
“While our music sounds different–us [Matt & Kim], Andrew W.K. and Soulja Boy–I think we’re coming at music from the same angle, which is we want to make music that people can shake their booties to,” Matt Johnson said. “Essentially, music to have fun to!”
The song’s verses continually switch back and forth between the three different artists with Matt & Kim taking the reins on the catchy hook during the chorus. It’s definitely an interesting collaboration, so check out the video of it below. What do you think? Is it too strange of a collaboration? Or is it the catchiest tune to close out your summer?
