The 84th Annual Academy Awards might be getting an indie makeover. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences selected 39 artists and their songs to compete for a nomination for the Best Original Song award. This time around, The National, Jonsí, She & Him and Flight of the Conchords’ Bret McKenzie will be vying for the top spot.

Tomorrow, Thursday Jan. 5, members of the Academy will screen clips featuring all of the songs that were shortlisted (full list below). After a rigorous voting process, if a song makes an average score of 8.25 or better it will be nominated for the award. If no songs make at least 8.25, though, there will be no nominations.

Also, to be considered for Best Original Song, the piece must have original music and lyrics, which were written specifically for the film. The song must appear within the body of the film or be the first song cued for the closing credits.

The National is up for “Think You Can Wait” for Win Win, Jonsí is being considered for “Gathering Stories from We Bought a Zoo, Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward of She & Him are up for “So Long” from Winnie the Pooh and Bret McKenzie for “Life’s a Happy Song” and “Pictures in My Head” both of which are from the new Muppet Movie.

All nominations for the 84th Annual Academy Awards will be announced Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2012 at 5:30 a.m. And the actual ceremony will be aired Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012 on ABC.
